Of course we want our players to get better, but we REALLY want our players to have fun! As someone who coaches skill development for kids of all ages, I can tell you one thing, KIDS GET BORED! If you aren’t switching things up and adding fun games into your routine your players aren’t going to want to come back 😬 Being a youth coach means you have two primary customers, the PARENT and the PLAYER 🧑🏽‍🍼 The PARENT wants to get their moneys worth, they want to see measurable results, quickly. Of course they want their kids to have a good time, but not at the expense of development. Practicing with only games may be fun for the kids, but a waste of money for their parents. If they wanted to see their kids run around like crazy, they can go to the park for free. The PLAYER wants to have fun. A 7 year old kid doesn’t really recognize their own ability yet, they aren’t thinking about results and work ethic. They’re thinking about what video game they’re going to play when practice is over or what funny things happened at school that day. To ensure that these kids actually want to come back, we need to put smiles on faces. By incorporating fun, fast-pace games into our training, we create an environment players are excited to come back to! Also, keep in mind that we don’t get to see these kids lives outside of the gym. Home life and school life might not be going that well for them, so creating a fun escape from reality could literally change their life. Here’s three things we focus on to have an explosive first step and smooth BTL: 1) Exploding out of your stance - whether your in a drop stance or pushing off of one knee, focus on using your hips to drive you forward. 2) Keep your shoulders low - low man wins. You get more leverage when you drop your hips and shoulders, use cones and other tools to help keep your shoulders low while training. 3) Work at your speed - we make sure our youth players work at their own pace, going through a drill too fast doesn’t allow you to see the details. WHY I USE MATS AND CONES… 🏀 Using tools like skill mats and cones allow youth players to hold themselves accountable to spacing, footwork, ball placement and positioning. By using SKILL MATS, we give our players a visible marker for foot placement and ball placement. They don’t have to be spot on, but it holds them accountable to the small details that are so important when learning new moves. Cones are extremely versatile, they can be used to remind players of positioning but also used for skill work. Above you see us using the cone to ensure the ball handler lowers his shoulders while driving towards the basket. By combining these tools with “game like” drills and movements, we can cater the challenge level of the drill, to the skill level of the athlete. Using these tools is vital in helping young players learn new moves and gain CONFIDENCE.
